Maha paddlers extend tally to 7 medals

Mumbai: Maharashtra paddlers completed their successful run in the 11SPORTS National Ranking Tournament (East Zone), adding two more silver and two bronze medals at the RG Barua Sports Complex Indoor Stadium in Guwahati late on Sunday evening.

Radhika Sakpal and Akshat Jain bagged the silver in the Cadet Girls and Cadet Boys’ category while Gaurav Panchangam and Pritha Vartikar clinched the bronze in the Cadet Boys and the Sub-junior Girls to take their overall tally to two gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

In the Cadet Boys, Akshat Jain and Gaurav Panchangam ran into each other in the semifinals. Akshat advanced to the finals after a five-game thriller, restricting Gaurav to a bronze medal.

Akshat, however, couldn’t make use of the momentum and settled for the silver, losing 1-4 to Karnataka’s Hrishikesh Shetluur.

In the Cadet Girls’, Radhika Sakpal was in her elements, scoring 3-0 victories to march into the finals.

However, Bengal’s Sayani Panda proved too hot to handle as she bagged the silver medal.

In the Sub-junior Girls, Pritha Vartikar scored convincing wins in the initial rounds to move into the semifinals. However, Pritha couldn’t cope up with the pressure from Haryana’s Suhana Saini as she lost 0-4 to settle for a bronze medal.
